In the Gospel reading today from Matthew 10, Jesus talks about your worth. “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Did you know the average human head has 100,000 hairs? Of course it varies for each individual, but that's the average. But you must know that you are not "average"!
This is Jesus’ way of saying two things. First, God knows you – he knows everything about you, even to the tiniest detail. He knows every hair on your head (even if there aren’t any left!), all your wicked thoughts and pet sins. Even through all that, the second thing is he loves you. He loves you immeasurably. I’m always amazed about that. Even though God knows EVERYTHING about me, he loves me still. Now that’s love.
Father, thank you for loving us despite all our baggage. Draw us ever closer to you each and every day. Amen.
