Chosen to be Holy

Posted on

For today’s first reading, we begin a trip through St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians. (This is going to be awesome!) St. Paul starts his letters with an introduction and a prayer. Check out this prayer that begins Ephesians.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him.” Did you catch that? God has chosen us to be holy!

Now, does this mean we are going to be holy? That depends on our response. Think of it like this. Say you get a job offer. You have been chosen for that job. No one is forcing you to take it. You can turn it down. Same with the call to holiness. You have been chosen to be holy. You don’t have to answer or accept. But given the One who has chosen you, why wouldn’t you?

Father, we know that you have chosen us to be holy. Give us all the grace and strength we need to say yes to a life of holiness. Amen.
