Children of Light

Posted on

We hear more about Jesus’ return in our first reading today from 1 Thessalonians 5. More in a moment. In the Gospel reading from Luke 4, we see Jesus casting out a demon from a man. The people are amazed and say, “For with authority and power he commands unclean spirits, and they come out.”

We’ve been hearing an awful lot lately about the return of the Lord. The people that St. Paul addressed were operating under the assumption that Jesus’ return was imminent. We should, too. St. Paul offers the Thessalonians some encouragement. “But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of you are children of light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness.”

Children of light. We are not of the darkness. We know that Jesus is the light of the world. But Jesus said the same thing about us (see Matthew 5:14). We are children of light when we allow the light of Christ to shine on us, in us and through us. Let’s make sure that today we’re beaming with the light of Christ!

Father, may the light of Christ shine on us, in us and through us today. Amen.
