Capernaum

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 4, we see that Jesus "went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali..." It then goes on to say this was because a prophecy from Isaiah.

Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles,
the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.

So, why Capernaum? The name Capernaum means "town on the border." It's believed that Capernaum sat right on the border of the Land of Zebulun and the Land of Naphtali. So, this wasn't some random choice by Jesus. In fact, nothing He did was random! And it's still that way. He has a purpose and a plan for everything.

Father, may we always be open to your plan for us. Amen.
