Better Than a Lottery Win

Posted on

In today’s Gospel reading, we hear two parables in Matthew 13. They both have to do with getting rich.

Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

Today the parable might have to do with a winning lottery ticket. If you had a lottery ticket worth millions of dollars, what would you do to protect it? Probably whatever it took. You would hang on to that baby with white knuckles. But what about your faith? What about Jesus? What about eternal life? Are those worth protecting at any cost? When you have those, it’s worth more than any treasure or pearl or lottery ticket. Yes, my friend, when you value faith in Jesus more than anything else, even the biggest lottery win will pale in comparison.

Father, show us the value of faith and Jesus, that we may do whatever is necessary to hold on to them. Amen.
