An Evil Generation

Posted on

For today's first reading, we begin a trip through St. Paul's Letter to the Romans. It's going to be an interesting few weeks as we go through Romans, so stay tuned.

In the Gospel reading from Luke 11, Jesus says to the crowd, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah." I want to reflect on Jesus referring to the people of that time as "an evil generation."

It seems to me that since the fall of man, every generation has been an evil generation to some degree. And I think about the generation in which we live today. For decades, we have allowed the wholesale slaughter of innocent children in the womb. This generation has condoned the mutilation of children with gender dysphoria. Mass shootings have become all too commonplace. What do you think Jesus would say about our generation? I suspect His words would be just the same as they were two thousand years ago.

Father, forgive us for being yet another evil generation. Help us to repent and return to you, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
