A Holy Family

Posted on

Today is the Feast of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus. In times past, this was the Feast of St. Martha, but the Church has added her siblings to the feast.

The Gospel reading today from Luke 10 is the familiar story of Jesus dining at the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Martha enjoins the Lord to chastise her sister for not helping serve. Jesus says, "Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."

Every family has issues, some large, some very small. But we see in these three siblings a family that all loved Jesus. Martha served him while Mary (and, perhaps, Lazarus) simply listened to Him. Let's pray that our families will take on these same charisms and serve and follow Jesus.

Father, we thank you for the example of Martha and Mary and Lazarus. Bless our families and keep them holy, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
