Gus talks about the TV show The Chosen and, in particular, its portrayal of St. Matthew. He is a tax collector but displays the attributes of autism or Asperger's syndrome. Gus admits that, at first, he struggled with the portrayal but has since come to find it to be brilliant. We have a tendency to glorify Scripture heroes and make them seem superhuman. Gus says that God calls everyone. He invites listeners to call in and share their thoughts.
Also, Jim Cavnar of Cross Catholic Outreach calls in to talk with Gus about the work the organization does. He shares how it's the job of the Church with less need to help the parts of the Church with greater need. Cross Catholic Outreach serves Catholics and non-Catholics in areas ravaged by poverty and natural disasters, particularly in the Caribbean. He also talks about their Box of Joy program, which is a project of theirs that provides schools, parishes, organizations and families an opportunity to send gifts to Haiti, Guatemala and other developing countries.
And Gus goes over some Catholic news items of interest, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren's continued attempt to shut down crisis pregnancy centers and Nicaragua dictator Daniel Ortega shutting down Catholic processions as the suppression of the Catholic Church there goes on.
Hey Gus,
Thank you for turning me on to The Chosen! I found your discussion about the portrayal of Matthew rather fascinating, but I didn’t get around to checking out the show for a few weeks. Once I finally had the chance to watch it, I couldn’t stop! I binged the first season in a day, and soon after watched the second season, also in a day. Since then, I’ve gone through both seasons of the show multiple times, which is definitely not something I would normally do. And I’m looking forward to seeing the first two episodes of season 3 in the theater tomorrow.
Between listening to the Catholic Channel daily for the past year, as well my new-found interest in The Chosen, my faith has definitely become more solid. So, thank you for being a part of that!
God bless you, Gus!
