Gus talks a recent story in Crisis Magazine that seems to signal the current financial struggle at the National Catholic Reporter, a national newspaper that’s reported on issues related to the Catholic Church since 1968. Although there’s no official statement from NCR, several of their feature writers have announced their layoffs on social media, including veteran senior editor Heidi Schlumpf, and their Vatican correspondent Christopher White is leaving his post in Rome and will be covering the Vatican from their office in Georgetown University. Gus has long disliked the National Catholic Reporter and he’s certainly not alone. Over the years, their reporting has indicated their stances against traditional Catholic teaching on issues like same-sex marriage, abortion, the male-only priesthood, etc. He refers to the magazine as a heterodox publication, which means “deviation from accepted or orthodox standards,” and he struggles with cheering for its failure because real lives will be impacted although he does view their agenda as “the enemy.” He invites listeners to call him and give their takes on that issue.
Later, Gus goes over a recent study conducted by the Journal of Religion and Health that assessed the impact of praying the Rosary on well-being and mental health. Based on their research, it rivals modern meditation for mental health benefits.
Afterwards, Gus plays the Conclusion from the audio version of his 2012 book “Magnetic Christianity: Using Your God-Given Gifts to Build the Kingdom,” which is entiled “Go.” In it, Gus talks about the importance of having a life verse, that is, a favorite Scripture passage that lives in your heart, and invites listeners to call in and share theirs.
