Msgr. Patrick Winslow, vicar general and chancellor of the Diocese of Charlotte, North Carolina, calls in to talk about the damage done to the western portion of North Carolina and surrounding areas and states by Hurricane Helene. He shares what Catholic Charities is doing to help people in affected areas in both the short term and long term and lets listeners know how they can help. Afterwards, Gus is joined by his brother Gary from Del Rio, Tennessee, which was impacted greatly by Hurricane Helene and subsequent flooding. He talks about what he experienced and the damage done to his community.
Also, Fr. Steve Jakubowski, C.S.C. joins Gus today. You may know him as the Jeopardy priest. Last month he appeared as a contestant on the long-running NBC game show. He also serves as the parochial vicar of St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church and School in Austin, Texas and was only ordained as a Holy Cross priest back in April. Before going into talking about the Jeopardy experience, he shares his vocation story and what he hopes for his ministry, which is just starting. He shares with Gus the process of actually getting on the show, the experience of being in that moment, and some of the feedback he’s received since his appearance.
And today is the Feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, aka the Little Flower, the late 19th century Carmelite nun who died at the age of 24. Though she was quiet and unappreciated by her fellow sisters in her life, her “Little Way” continues to be an inspiration to millions. She wrote her story and spiritual philosophies down in what became an autobiography entitled “Story of a Soul.” Gus reads an excerpt from it and talks about how inspirational she’s become to him. He invites listeners to call in and talk about saints who had a profound impact on them.
St. Therese, pray for us!
