Today is Election Day and, because we live in a very divided and often volatile political culture, Gus invites listeners to call in and share their level of concern today on a scale of 0 to 10.
Also, this week is National Vocations Awareness Week in the Catholic Church and Gus is joined by the Vocations Director of the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Fr. Joshua Weaver. He shares his vocation and then talks about the incredible number of vocations and priest to parish ratio in his diocese. He also talks about their outreach and how they foster vocations among young men.
And Gus reads and reflects on a story out of the Diocese of Jefferson City, Missouri where the bishop there, Shawn McKnight has banned the singing of certain hymns during mass because they’re doctrinally problematic or were written by individuals facing credible abuse charges. The directive follows guidelines laid out by the USCCB in 2020. Gus invites listeners to call in and comment.
I want to thank Gus and Fr. Joshua Weaver for the interview on Tuesday, Nov 5th.
I was listening in my car as the interview started. I was pulling into the parking lot of the gym I work out at. Gus’ interview questions were so insightful and sensitive. Fr. Joshua’s description of his vocation journey was so real, so honest that I could not get out of my car. Gus allowed Fr. Joshua to be vulnerable and share his struggles as well as his faith and his experience of noticing the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This was not just some “rah rah, let’s sign up more guys for the priesthood” rant. It was an example of real gut-level experience of noticing the promptings of the Holy Spirit and trying, often with difficulty, to discern and follow God’s call. No B.S.!
Listening to the interview brought tears to my eyes as I recognized Fr. Joshua’s feelings and struggles and as similar to what I have experienced in my own life. Although I am not a priest, Fr. Joshua inspired me to think and pray more intently about want God is calling me to.
