Gus talks about Artificial Intelligence, or AI as it is commonly known. Over the Christmas break, all four of his children and their families came home, and his oldest son Patrick demonstrated Chat GPT and other AI aspects to him. It gave him pause because it’s all at once fascinating and frightening. Fr. Phillip Larrey, a professor of philosophy at Boston College and a student of AI for 30 years, calls in to talk about it with Gus and tries to allay some of the fears. Fr. Larrey talks about some fearful aspects of the rise of AI, particularly job losses that are going to happen, but compares it to the Industrial Revolution that began in the late-19th century. Before that, most farm work was done by hand. Today, only 3% is done that way. Fr. Larrey tells Gus and his listeners not to underestimate human adaptability in finding new ways to work. He also tells Gus that, although he loves science fiction, he doesn’t foresee AI taking over our lives.
Also, tonight begins the first of two College Football Playoff Semifinal games with Penn State taking on Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. Tomorrow night, Ohio State plays Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Gus invites listeners to call in and share the role sports plays in their lives and give winner predictions.
And Gus has been hitting the hot topic of illegal immigration and mass deportation a lot lately. President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on organizing the largest mass deportation in U.S. history. Gus talks about that and the response from the USCCB, which emphasizes the dignity of all human persons. Gus gets listener reaction.
