Zeal

Posted on

For the next few weeks of Lent, you may have different readings at Mass than the ones here. Many parishes use the readings for Year A, especially at Masses where rites for RCIA are conducted. (We're in Year B this year.)

In today's Gospel reading from John 2, we read the story of Jesus turning over the tables of the money-changers in the temple area. He says, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” The Scripture then tells us, “His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me.” This is a reference to Psalm 69. He then goes on to say, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” Of course, He was talking about the temple of His body.

Let me ask you a question today: Does zeal for God’s house (the Church) consume you? Do you even have zeal at all? Let’s try it another way with a variation of the word. Are you zealous about your faith? Some folks take that word as a negative. I hope you don’t. Because if your faith is not worth being zealous over, then why bother at all? If you’re just lukewarm, you may as well just pack it in. (See Revelation 3:16 for clarification.)

Father, give us zeal for our faith! Save us from the diseases of lukewarm-ness and indifference. May we imitate Jesus in having zeal for Your house! Amen.

    Gus and Neil,

Thanks for the morning reflections. They help me. Some days like Neil, I feel lukewarm, and I think that is natural. But the fact you keep listening, keep trying, keep praying means you haven’t given up, and your zeal will return.

So, Neil, don’t pack it up. I believe that is meant to spur you just to try harder. Good morning Child of God, Neil, God loves you and wants you to know Him better.

    Best wishes
    Anne

    Hi Gus,

    Hope all is well.

I am someone really struggling to figure out my faith, my relationship to God, and how to have that relationship impact my daily life.

I use your 60 seconds reflection as part of my daily attempt to bring God into my day.

Today’s message left me somewhat dejected. Specifically your comment about packing it in.

I know that I fall short of Gods kingdom everyday. I am sure that shortcoming includes my level of zeal. So your reflection makes me feel that I should just pack it in. Not a great feeling.

    Thanks,
    Neil
