Youth

In the Gospel reading today from Luke 9, the disciples do not understand something that Jesus says. Even though they didn’t get it, they were afraid to ask Him about it. What was it that Jesus said that confounded them so? Read it for yourself!

Have you ever heard the old saying, “Youth is wasted on the young”? I guess it means that when we’re young and our bodies are vigorous and our minds alert, we lack the wisdom and experience to take full advantage of those attributes. We tend to make an awful lot of mistakes. Perhaps this is what the author of Ecclesiastes alludes to in today’s first reading. “Rejoice, O young man, while you are young and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Ward off grief from your heart and put away trouble from your presence, though the dawn of youth is fleeting.”

If I only knew then what I know now. Sigh… But perhaps we should take a look at youth in more relative terms. You see, no matter how old you are chronologically, you are always a child of God. It doesn’t really matter how old you are. Go out and rejoice and let your heart be glad TODAY!!

Father, we thank you for the gift of youth, no matter how old we are. Teach us to rejoice like children each and every day. Amen.
