Your Legacy

Posted on

In today's first reading from Isaiah 11, we hear a name that pops up every year during Advent and approaching Christmas: Jesse. We see it at the beginning and end of today's reading.

"On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom...On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious."

Who was Jesse? He was the father of King David. When I read these passages, it makes me wonder. Did Jesse have any idea about the legacy that he would leave behind? That his name would be remembered forever? As a father, I pray that I will be able to leave a lasting legacy by passing along the faith to all those I encounter. Honestly, you and I will probably not be remembered forever here on earth. But our legacy can indeed last into eternity. What are you doing about your legacy today?

Father, help us to build and leave a lasting legacy, one that bears fruit through the generations. Amen.
