The theme of today’s readings is asking. The first reading is from the Book of Esther. The story of Esther is a wonderful story and I highly encourage you to read it. (Note: it’s not very long…an easy read!) Today we read the beautiful prayer of Esther as she comes to the Lord ASKING for His help as she prepares to go speak before the king.
Our Gospel reading is from Matthew 7. Jesus says to his disciples, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you…If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him?”
Back in the days before GPS, sometimes you had to stop and ask others for directions when you got lost. Many men (and some women, perhaps) had a really difficult time with that. We tend to be stubborn and prideful and so fail to ask for help. I suspect it happens to all of us occasionally. But spiritually speaking, stubbornness and pride are deadly. Listen, when you're lost, you just need to ask God for help. He'll always be there with a helping hand.
Father, forgive us for those times when we're too stubborn or prideful to ask for help. We need you, Lord! HELP! Amen.
