David had sinned greatly. This did not escape the LORD’s notice. More in a moment. In today’s Gospel reading from Mark 4, Jesus and His disciples are in a boat when a storm suddenly comes up. The disciples wake Jesus up and ask, “Do you not care that we are perishing?” Be sure to read Jesus’ response.
God sent the prophet Nathan to confront King David about his abominable actions – getting Bathsheba pregnant and having her husband killed. Nathan comes and tells a story to David about a rich man who stole a poor man’s ewe. David replies, “The man who has done this merits death!” Nathan says to him, “You are the man!”
It can be very painful for us when God holds up a mirror; when we have to look at ourselves and our own actions and own up to them. Most often this goes one of two ways: our hearts grow even harder, or we repent and seek forgiveness. David did the latter, though his sins came at a great cost. Those mirrors can be very scary. How will you respond when God holds one up to you?
Father, give us humble hearts of repentance when you reveal to us our own sinfulness. Amen.
