In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 23, Jesus warns His followers not to be like the scribes and Pharisees. He says, "Do observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but do not practice." He goes on to say, "All their works are performed to be seen."
I want to share a story, but I'm afraid sharing the story itself will seem to go against this saying of Jesus. I hope you'll see it otherwise. Recently a pregnancy center that Michelle and I support asked if they could name a room after us, with a little plaque above the door to let people know of our support. I was appalled. Not at the request; it's pretty standard practice to honor donors. I get that. But these words of Jesus echoed in my ears. We politely declined.
I know that there are two ways to look at this, and I respect those who would accept the request in hopes that others may support the organization. But we should never give for the purpose of being recognized. Jesus summed it up. "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
Father, may we never do good works for the purpose of being seen. If our good works are seen, may they only glorify you. Amen.

Gus, I appreciate you sharing this story. I try to always remember to give in secret and I also try to teach my family to live humbly as well.
