Woe

Posted on

Today's first reading from Micah 2 starts with this: "Woe to those who plan iniquity, and work out evil on their couches..."

The word "woe" is used in many instances in Scripture. And when it is, it's never a good thing. While it is always a warning, perhaps we can change the way we look at it.

Perhaps it is an invitation. An invitation to change, to repent. If we're not participating in an activity that would merit a "woe," then see it as a warning.  But if we are, then we must change our ways. Perhaps when a "woe" is pronounced on us, we should give thanks. Thank God for helping us recognize our behavior and giving us the opportunity to turn things around.

Father, may we always be aware of times when we turn away from you. May your "woe" help to turn us around. Amen.
