Wise Men Still Seek Him

Posted on

Today is the Feast of Epiphany. The Gospel reading tells the story of the Three Kings, or the Three Wise Men. They heard that the King of the Jews had been born and followed a star to find him. King Herod tries to trick them into giving up the location of the child. But they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, so they went another way.

There’s an old bumper sticker that says, “Wise Men Still Seek Him.” Have you seen it? How true this is. The Wise Men came from far away just to pay homage. They probably sacrificed much to see this newborn King of the Jews. It makes me wonder about how much effort we are willing to put out in order to do Him homage.

It always amazes me how little, yet how much, Holy Mother Church expects of us. One hour a week for Mass. Confession once a year. Yet for some it seems too big a burden to bear. What?!?! Mass EVERY WEEK? Come on!! And since the pandemic, some folks have abandoned the faith altogether. Yet we see these three Wise Men making a journey of untold length just to pay Jesus a short visit. If only we could feel the same.

Father, give us wisdom. Make us wise men and women. Give us the same desire to put aside everything just to visit with Jesus. Amen.
