Why We're Deaf and Mute

Posted on

Jesus performs another miracle in today’s Gospel reading from Mark 7. He takes a deaf mute away from the crowds and heals him. The people were astonished and said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

As with so many other characters that we see in Scripture, that deaf mute represents you and me. While from a physical standpoint we may be able to hear and speak, spiritually we can suffer greatly from both of those maladies. We have ears but do not hear, and tongues but do not speak. Why is that?

The answer, of course, is because we don’t want to. We’re presented with the message of the Gospel, but it doesn’t fit well with our current lifestyle or way of thinking. So we tune it out. We become deaf. We are called to speak the truth. But we’re afraid others won’t like us, or we’ll be embarrassed. And so we become mute. The solution to these maladies? The same as the deaf mute in today’s Gospel reading: Jesus! If we are open, we can allow Jesus to open our ears and our mouths. Are you open?

Father, we ask you today to have Jesus heal our deafness and open our mouths to proclaim your truth. Amen.
