Today’s Gospel reading is from Matthew 17, the story of Jesus taking Peter, James and John up on Mt. Tabor where He is transfigured.
For a brief, shining moment, Peter, James and John get a glimpse of “the other side” of Jesus; in His glory. Without realizing it, they were looking into the future. Not just the future for Jesus, but for themselves. And for us. As they looked at Jesus’ radiance, how could they have known that they, too, would have a share in that radiance? That the light which they beheld, they would become?
We, too, are called to be that light. But why should we wait? We need to be transfigured each and every day. To shine out the light of Christ. If we persevere to the end, we will not only see that heavenly glory, but become a part of that heavenly glory. Total light! Total victory! Total freedom! That is what we want…isn’t it?
Father, we thank you for the light that is Christ Jesus. May we imitate him in all things, that we may show His heavenly glory today and share in it with you forever. Amen.
