Who is My Mother?

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from Mark 3, Jesus is teaching in a crowded house when His family requests Him. "Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you."

Jesus replies, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."

Some say that Jesus was minimizing the role of His mother with this reply. Actually, just the opposite is true. Mary did the will of God at every moment of her life. She is more than just the physical mother of Jesus, she is the spiritual mother of all Christians. We would do well to imitate her.

Father, we thank you that we can be part of Jesus' family, with Mary as our mother. Amen.
