Who Do You Say…

Posted on

Today’s Gospel reading is Luke’s version of Peter’s great profession of faith. Jesus asks the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter replies, “The Christ of God.” It’s a legitimate question, even for us.

Who do you say that Jesus is? Some would say a great teacher. Others would say a prophet. Some would say that He was a nice guy who told us to love people. Still others may claim Him to be a charlatan, a fraud. Now, if you’re a Christian, then chances are that you would say something akin to what Peter said. Jesus is God Incarnate. The Second Person of the Trinity. The Word made Flesh. The King of Kings. The Lord of Lords.

If these are your answers, then there is an appropriate follow-up question: Are you living your life like you believe what your answer to the question is? How do we do that? Well, Jesus gives us the answer just a few sentences later. “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Father, help us live what we profess. Give us the grace to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. Amen.
