In today's Gospel reading from John 1, the Jews from Jerusalem send people to ask a question of John the Baptist. It seems like a simple enough question. Who are you?
John first lets them know who he is not. He is not the Christ, not Elijah, no the Prophet. He then replies, "I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Make straight the way of the Lord.'" John knew exactly who he was.
If I were to ask you that question, what would your answer be? Your answer would be very telling. It should speak to the very core of your being. Some may answer with their occupation. But remember, the question is not "What are you?" but "Who are you?" My answer? I am a child of God, and a servant of the King. It's not what I am, but who I am.
Father, help us to find our identity in you, and in your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
