What's in it for Us?

Posted on

Some interesting readings today, and I'll take them in reverse order. In the Gospel reading from Mark 10, Peter says to Jesus, "We have given up everything to follow you." While there is no question here, I believe the implied question is, "What's in it for us?" Jesus gives him the answer.

In the first reading from 1 Peter 1, St. Peter gives advice for living and starts with, "Concerning the salvation of your souls..." He then goes on to say, "As he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct, for it is written, Be holy because I am holy."

I'm sure that Peter wasn't expecting material riches from following Jesus. It's interesting to hear his advice to believers in his later years after what Jesus told him. The important answer to "What's in it for me?" has little or nothing to do with this life, and everything to do with the life to come.

Father, help us to be holy, because you are holy, to be last, that our reward will be great for eternity. Amen.
