We hear more of Jesus’ words to the Apostles at the Last Supper from John 16 today. He tells them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.” That’s quite a promise, wouldn’t you say. So let me ask you something: If you could ask the Father for anything, ANYTHING, what would you ask for?
Well, here’s the rub with that question: it is a loaded question. Why? Because you CAN ask the Father for anything! But what about the answers we receive? Let’s take a for-instance. Father, in Jesus’ name, I ask you to give me winning Powerball numbers for tonight’s drawing. Now, you’ve done what Jesus said, followed the formula. But then you wake up on Sunday morning and lo and behold, no winning lottery ticket. What’s going on here? Did Jesus not mean what He said?
We must always remember that God is a loving Father. He is only going to give to us that which He knows is best for us. If one of your children came and asked you for a machine gun, would you give him one? No, because you know that that would only result in trouble. Same principle with God. He’ll give us whatever we ask…as long as it is in our best interests. And when it comes to that, God knows far better than we do what that is.
Father, we thank you for always looking out for our best interests. Teach us to ask only that Your will be done in our lives. Amen.
