In today's Gospel reading from Mark 1, we read about Jesus going out into the desert for forty days before beginning His public ministry. He opens His public ministry with these words:
"This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."
The reflection today isn't so much a reflection, but an assignment. I want you to answer this question: What is the gospel? If you received ashes on Ash Wednesday, the minister may have echoed the words of Jesus - "Turn away from your sins and be faithful to the gospel." It begs the question: What is the gospel? Think about that today.
Father, may we be ever more aware of the gospel, and how we're being faithful to it - or not - in our lives. Amen.
