We Know Not How

Posted on

In the Gospel reading from Mark 4, Jesus tells a couple of parables about the Kingdom of God. The first is about the mysterious way that God works. “It is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.”

How is it that plants grow? How is it that life starts? Of course, we know that these things are all the work of God. God alone creates life. Yet even with the amazing advances we have in science, we still cannot create life. How it happens is a mystery known only to God. While we see the results, we can only know that God is working behind the scenes. So it is with our lives. God is always at work behind the scenes; we know not how. Rest assured that He knows exactly what He is doing.

Father, we thank you for your guiding hand in our lives, though we may not see. Help us to trust that you are always at work in our lives, though we know not how. Amen.
