We are Prophets

Posted on

Prophet is a word that most people would shy away from when describing themselves. Actually, all Christians are called to be prophets. If we only knew!

In the first reading today from Numbers 11:25-29, two men are prophesying outside of the Israelites camp. The report comes to Moses. Moses responds, “Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! Would that the LORD might bestow his spirit on them all!” We see a similar story in the Gospel reading from Mark 9. When told that someone was driving out demons in Jesus’ name, Jesus replies, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us.”

Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! You know what – that’s the way it’s supposed to be. You see, a prophet is not someone who foretells the future. A prophet is one who speaks the words of the Lord. Are we not called to do that every day? The answer is YES! Today, speak words of truth, peace and love to others. Be the prophet that God is calling you to be!

Father, help us today to exercise our prophetic ministry. Help us to be open to speaking your word to everyone we encounter. Amen.
