Walking Through a Mine Field

Posted on

On the border of Israel and Syria, there are mine fields. They're clearly marked with a sign featuring a skull and crossbones. They let you know that you do not want to set foot in there, to go in either direction.

What if you had to walk through a mine field? If you had to do it to save your own life or of someone you love? What would be the best way to do that? I think it would be great if someone could point out to me exactly where to walk to avoid the mines. I bring this all up because of today's first reading from Isaiah 30. "No longer will our Teacher hide himself, but with  your own eyes you shall see your Teacher, while from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears: 'This is the way; walk in it,' when you would turn to the right or to the left."

You and I both know that this world is very much like a mine field. And when we stray from the path of God, we enter that mine field. That's why we need to listen to the Holy Spirit and Christ's Church - that little voice saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Avoid the mine field.

Father, give us ears to hear the voice of the Spirit instructing us in the way we should walk to avoid the mine field of the world. Amen.
