Understanding

Posted on

We see some tough questions from Jesus in today’s Gospel reading. More in a moment. For our first reading, we’re in Genesis 6 and 7, reading about Noah. Everyone else on earth was evil, so God decided to start over again with Noah and his family.

When Jesus tells the disciples, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod,” they misinterpret what He had said. Jesus then asks them a series of brutal questions. “Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear?”

I often take heart in knowing that even those closest to Jesus didn’t always understand Him. I know I still struggle with that. Jesus is not always easy to “get.” His teachings can go against everything in us. Love your enemies? Forgive those who don’t deserve forgiveness? I guess that’s where prayer and trust come into play. Because even when those times come where I still don’t understand, I must trust and obey. Aren’t those really the most difficult times of all?

Father, you know how hard it can be for us to understand your will. Even when we don’t understand, help us to trust and obey. Amen.
