In today's Gospel reading from Luke 9, Jesus tells the people, "Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men." But they did not understand this saying.
Understanding is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Obviously, the people had not received this gift. Have you been given the gift of Understanding? Not sure what that means? Well, here's an excerpt from my new book A Minute in the Church: Back to the Basics (which will be available soon!) about Understanding.
Understanding helps us "get" the things of heaven. It helps us comprehend more fully the mind of God and the mysteries of the Kingdom. In fact, a great synonym for Understanding would be comprehension. Understanding take us beyond mere assent to the truths of the faith and to certitude. Understanding leads to Wisdom.
Father, send your Spirit upon us and bless us with the gift of Understanding. Amen.
