In today's first reading from 1 Corinthians 11, St. Paul recounts the Last Supper and the words of institution of the Eucharist. "This is my Body." But wait...Paul was not at the Last Supper. So how did he get this? Read and find out.
In the Gospel reading from Luke 7, we see the story of a centurion desiring Jesus to heal a slave of his who was about to die. When Jesus was a short distance from the house, the centurion sends servants to tell Jesus, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof...but say the word and let my servant be healed."
We repeat a slight variation of these words (the ones from Matthew's Gospel) just before we receive Jesus in Holy Communion. But isn't it striking how accurate they are for us? While the centurion was referring to the roof of his home, we are also referring to roof of our mouth! Thank you, Jesus, for entering under our roof!
Father, like the centurion, we are not worthy. Yet your Son comes to feed us always, entering under the roof of our mouths. May we always be filled with gratitude. Amen.
