Time to Seek the Lord

Posted on

In the Gospel reading today from Matthew 10, we see the listing of the Twelve Apostles. Then Jesus sends out the Twelve, telling them to “go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ ” One of Jesus’ main missions was to gather in the lost tribes of Israel.

The Prophet Hosea has some wise words for the people in today’s first reading from Hosea 10. “Sow for yourselves justice, reap the fruit of piety; break up for yourselves a new field, for it is time to seek the Lord.” Time to seek the Lord. The people had stopped seeking the Lord. They had found their pleasure elsewhere. False gods. Sex. Material possessions. They no longer felt that they had a need for God. Actually, this sounds all too familiar to me.

So many today feel the same. They have no need, no time for God. They’re too busy making a living, seeking out the pleasures of the world. Little do they know that they really are seeking God. They just don’t know it. They think they will find meaning in all these things. But it is only when we realize that things won’t give our lives meaning that we begin the search in earnest. It is time to seek the Lord.

Father, show us your face. Help us to stop looking for meaning in all the wrong places. May we seek you out every day. Amen.
