On Day 3 in Salmanca, Gus gets to know many of the pilgrims today. First, he talks with mother/daughter pilgrims Tricia and Alice Nelson who were last minute entrants into the pilgrimage. Tricia’s other daughter, Kelly, died a few months back and they talk with Gus about her last days and how they’re dedicating this pilgrimage to her.
Later, Gus talks with Discalced Carmelite Brother John Cannon, who shares his vocation story and what brought him to Spain. Discalced is Latin for “without shoes” and he explains to Gus how you can tell the difference between a Discalced Carmelite monk and a Franciscan one. Afterwards, he talks to Jim Kowalik who’s on his fourth Seize the Day pilgrimage who talks about what goes in to preparing for a pilgrimage.
Gus also talks with Fr. Leo Patalinghug about a pilgrimage phenomenon called “System Overload.” Around this point in the pilgrimage, many of the pilgrims become overwhelmed trying to take it all in. Gus and Fr. Leo discuss how to get through that.
