Today is the Fifth Day in the Octave of Christmas. It's a good day for us to consider the difference between the things we say and the thoughts of our hearts. I suspect that for most of us, those things are often different. In the first reading from 1 John 2, St. John says, "Whoever says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness."
In the Gospel reading from Luke 2, we see the prayer of Simeon. After blessing God that he had seen the Messiah, Simeon then says to Mary, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and the be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
Jesus indeed revealed the thoughts of many hearts. He still does today. We all live in our own heads. Yet seldom do we allow Jesus in there. Perhaps it's because we don't want Him to see the darkness within us. Funny thing is He already knows. Today, let Jesus penetrate your heart, and the thoughts of your heart. It may be painful at first, but true healing comes when we begin to more and more conform our hearts to His.
Father, we give Jesus permission to reveal the thoughts of our hearts. May our hearts be healed by His love. Amen.
