The Way Things Work

Posted on

Who is Jesus? In today's first reading from Colossians 1, we get that answer from St. Paul. Today's reading is a lesson in Christology.

In today's Gospel reading from Luke 5, Jesus gives a lesson in fashion repair. What? "No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak." Naturally, this has a much deeper meaning than fabric repair.

Can you imagine buying a brand new shirt, just to tear a piece from it to repair a beat up old shirt? Of course not. That's not the way things work. Same for the spiritual life. We cannot take on a new life in Christ and try to fit it into our old sinful ways. We must be all in for the new life Christ offers us. That's the way things work.

Father, may we put on a new life in Christ, leaving the old behind. Amen.
