In the first reading today from Isaiah 48, God says, “I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go.” Going the way God wants us to go is rarely the easy way. But it is always the way of wisdom.
In our Gospel reading from Matthew 11, we hear Jesus saying, “But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” In the Old Testament we read about Wisdom. Jesus is the personification of wisdom. Jesus is saying that the works and signs that He performs point to that fact. I believe there is an even deeper meaning to this saying of Jesus.
Have you ever looked back on your life and thought about some really dumb decisions you made and thought, “Boy, that was unwise.” But those times when we give ourselves up to God and his will, when we truly follow God’s path and God’s ways, we will see the great wisdom in doing that. Why? Because when we follow God’s way, everything is going to work out just fine. And the wisdom of following the path that God has set out for us will show in our works.
Father, help us to be truly wise and to follow your ways always. May all that we say and do be done out of the wisdom that only comes from you. Amen.
