The Two Lives of Augustine

Posted on

Today is the Feast of St. Augustine of Hippo. He is one of the greatest converts in history, and he recounts his story in his Confessions.

Like most converts, Augustine sort of had two lives: before Christ and with Christ. Augustine echoes the words of Christ in the Gospel reading today from Matthew 24. "Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come."

He then goes on to tell the story of two servants. One was prudent and going about the master's business when the master returned. The other ate and drank with drunkards and beat his fellow servants. For that he paid a steep price. Augustine was something of a wild child and mirrored the latter servants behavior early in life. But after his conversion, he became the faithful servant, being about the master's business. Which are you today?

Father, may we experience daily conversion and always be about your business. Amen.
