The Silent Denial

Posted on

In the first reading today from Ephesians 1:15-23, St. Paul prays that “the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe…” All things that we should pray for one another.

In the Gospel reading from Luke 12:8-12, Jesus gives a dire warning. “I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.”

You would never deny Jesus, would you? Of course the answer is NO! NEVER! But think of this for a moment. Could silence be a form of denial? Say you have an opportunity to share Christ with someone. But you’re afraid, self-conscious. It would be embarrassing to be so forward. So you opt to keep your mouth shut. While it may not seem to be an out and out denial of Jesus, I believe that it could well be a form of denial. Probably best not to take that chance. It’s probably best if we acknowledge Jesus at every opportunity.

Father, forgive us for the times when we deny the Son of Man. Help us to acknowledge and share Jesus always. Amen.
