In today's first reading, we begin the story of Jonah. Perhaps often thought of as a great kids' Bible story, it has so much to teach all of us.
Our Gospel reading from Luke 10 is the story of the Good Samaritan. There are so many aspect of this parable to explore. I want to focus in on the Samaritan today.
First, recall that the Jews and Samaritans were mortal enemies. There was no love for the other. So the Samaritan in the story actually took a great risk in helping a Jew. When his friends got wind of what he had done, he risked being ostracized. "How could you help a Jew?' they may say. But he knew that it was the right thing to do. He risked being ridiculed for what he did. But he did it anyway. Are we willing to take that kind of risk as well?
Father, give us the courage to do the right thing, even in the face of taking heat from others for our actions. Amen.
