Today is Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday. It marks the start of Holy Week. Today’s Gospel reading is the longest of the year. Today we hear (and even participate in) the Passion narrative.
Palm Sunday marks the day of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The people honored Him as a king. That’s why we get and wave palm branches today. We imitate the people welcoming King Jesus. Of course, Jesus knew what was coming in just a few short days. I wonder if any of the people knew how quickly they would turn on Him.
Isn’t it funny how someone can be a hero one moment and a pariah the next? I think that happens fairly often in our What have you done for me lately? world. We know that Jesus didn’t let the adulation go to His head. Neither should we. Beware when the world honors you; the quick turn may be just around the corner.
Father, help us to not seek out honor from the world, for we know that is fleeting. Let us always seek honor and approval from you. Amen.
