The Humility of John the Baptist

Posted on

Today the Church celebrates the birth of John the Baptist. Jesus proclaimed that John was Elijah, come to prepare the way for the Messiah.

There are so many traits of John the Baptist that we should imitate. I’ve always felt a very special connection with John. In fact, I chose him as my confirmation saint and took the name John many years ago. The trait I’d like to concentrate on today for reflection is his humility. We see this in today’s second reading from Acts of the Apostles 13.

John said, “Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” John was actually a big deal. He had many disciples. People came from near and far to hear him preach and teach. But John knew that his job, his mission was to point the way to Jesus. He sought no glory for himself, but wanted only to glorify the One who was worthy of glory and praise. Are we willing to step out of the limelight to let Jesus shine?

Father, teach us to be like John, always humbly pointing the way to Jesus. Amen.
