The Foolish, Weak and Lowly

Posted on

In today's second reading from 1 Corinthians 1, St. Paul says that God chose the foolish, weak and lowly to do great things for the Kingdom. Imagine that...God chose me! I feel like I fit into all of those categories. Do you?

Today's Gospel reading is from Matthew 5, the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus begins this great teaching with the Beatitudes. Blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are they who mourn, blessed are they who are persecuted. Kinda sounds like the second reading, doesn't it?

With most all of the categories mentioned in those readings, we probably don't feel particularly blessed or chosen when we're in those states, right? Yet we are. We need to remember that even when we're feeling weak, foolish, lowly, poor in spirit, in mourning, persecuted - all of those things - we are still chosen by God and blessed. So how does that make you feel? (Blessed and privileged, I hope!)

Father, thank you for choosing us and blessing us, even when we don't really feel that way. Amen.
