“Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb?” Seems like a rhetorical question, doesn’t it? This is the question that the Lord asks through the prophet Isaiah in today’s first reading. God lets us know that it is not purely rhetorical. He says, “Even should she forget, I will never forget you.” Friend, you can take that to the bank!
In today’s Gospel reading from John 5, the Jews want to kill Jesus. Not because of anything that He had done, per se, but because of what He said. “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” Here Jesus is calling God His own father, “making himself equal to God.” While Jesus was merely speaking the truth, this did not sit well with the Jews. But Jesus doesn’t stop there. He goes on to talk much more about the relationship between the Father and the Son.
The Son of God. This is something that we just kind of take for granted. But when Jesus first began to reveal this to the people, it was scandalous, even blasphemous. In fact, to many, it still is today. But this is the beginning of the great mystery of the Trinity. For thousands of years, great minds have been contemplating this great truth. And yet still it remains a mystery. Many of the people of Jesus’ time lacked faith. Many still do today. Do you?
Father, help us to understand more fully the mystery of the Trinity. Increase our faith in Jesus, and give us the grace and strength to live our lives as though we believe that He is the Son of God. Amen.
