The Fate of Evildoers

Posted on

In the first part of today's first reading from Ephesians 6, St. Paul talks about family relationships between parents and children. Both have a responsibility to the other.

In today's Gospel reading from Luke 13, Jesus is asked if only a few will be saved. He replies, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate." He then talks of people who knew him, but He responds, "Depart from me, all you evildoers!"

This intimates that those who do evil, despite what they say or who they know, will not enter heaven. Now, we may think that we never "do evil" (making us an evildoer). But if we dig just a bit deeper, might we find ways we participate in evil? (Think lying, gossiping, using pornography, advocating for abortion, mistreating others, taking the Lord's name in vain, breaking the Commandments.) We may think of evil as something done by homicidal maniacs. But perhaps there's more to it than that.

Father, forgive us for the many times we are evildoers. Help us always to repent of the evil we do, and commit to do no more. Amen.
