The Faithful and Prudent Servant

Posted on

In today's first reading from 1 Thessalonians 3, we see yet another beautiful prayer of St. Paul for the people. Our Gospel reading from Matthew 24 sounds much like Advent. (It's actually one of the readings for Advent."

"Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come." He then goes on to say, "Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so."

Since we don't know when the Master will return, we must always be about His business. We must always be building up the Kingdom of God. Of course, there are countless ways to go about this. Prayer and service should be on our daily agendas. Read the rest of the words of Jesus to hear about the consequences of not being about His business. The reading starts with one of His best pieces of advice. "Stay awake!"

Father, help us to be that faithful and prudent servant, to always be about serving the Lord, in whatever way He calls us to do so. Help us to Stay Awake today! Amen.
