In our first reading today from Romans 4, St. Paul continues his thoughts about the importance of faith. He speaks of faith as a gift. It is a gift of God, freely given, that we can accept or reject. Let us accept God’s gift anew each day!
In the Gospel reading from Luke 12:8-12, Jesus gives a dire warning. “I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.”
You would never deny Jesus, would you? Of course the answer is NO! NEVER! But think of this for a moment. Could silence be a form of denial? Say you have an opportunity to share your faith in Christ with someone. But you’re afraid, self-conscious. It would be embarrassing to be so forward. So you opt to keep your mouth shut. While it may not seem to be an out and out denial of Jesus, I believe that it could well be a form of denial. Probably best not to take that chance. It’s probably best if we acknowledge Jesus at every opportunity.
Father, forgive us for the times when we deny the Son of Man. Help us to acknowledge and share Jesus always. Amen.
