The Day is at Hand

Posted on

Today is the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new liturgical year. Happy New Year!

We begin the year (the season of Advent) by preparing for what is to come. In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 24 we hear Jesus say, "Stay awake!" And in the second reading from Romans 13, St. Paul says, "For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand."

Every day that passes is one day closer to our end - whatever that may be. Either we will die, or the Lord will return. One of those things is going to happen. The message of Advent is to be prepared for that day. Who knows, it could be today.

Father, help us to always remember that the day is at hand, and that we should conduct ourselves accordingly. Amen.

Hey Gus I grabbed this quote for my own blog today – kind of nails it – but a bit of a cold bucket of water we may need to wake us up from the drowsiness of every day live.

“Every day that passes is one day closer to our end – whatever that may be. Either we will die, or the Lord will return. One of those things is going to happen. The message of Advent is to be prepared for that day. Who knows, it could be today.” A good reminder to strive to be at peace every day and make sure everyone , especially God and our family knows that we love them dearly.
